I was leaving my restaurant job at a hotel in Colorado Springs on a rainy night in June. At my car, I heard meows. I looked down and there was an obviously homeless cat looking up at me. He had been waiting out in the rain under my car.

I picked him up and he was so happy and grateful to be held. He was a long-haired Persian, his fur all matted to one side. He was also very thin and had a broken tooth. I had seen two homeless cats around the building and left fresh water and food every day under some bushes, but I had never seen this little guy.

I couldn’t leave him; I had to take him home! He was so glad to go with me! My small dog’s blanket was in the backseat, and he laid on that perfectly and was so good the whole ride home. Luckily, the next day, I was able to take him to my vet to pull the broken tooth, get shots and have him checked out. My vet guessed him to be around 7 years old.

After he recovered at the vet’s, the next day, I took him to my groomer’s. She is so good! She cleaned him up, got all the matted fur off. He looked so much better and had to feel better, too! She said the same, guessed him to be 7. I named him Scotty.

I was so blessed to have him for eight wonderful years, but sadly, I lost him to kidney disease at 15. I’ve had many cats and dogs, all rescues, for the last 50 years, ever since I was 10. Scotty absolutely was one of my favorites. He was just so sweet and loving and happy to have a good home.

He was full-blooded Persian, and I always wondered how he became homeless around that hotel. One of best things I’ve ever done was take him home. I still miss him. I have his ashes in a little box, and his bright red collar, on my dresser. He brought so much joy to my life for the eight years I got to have him as part of my family.
