Labrador retrievers continue to be one of the most popular dogs in the U.S. and hold the record for the number one spot at 31 years. The family-friendly dogs are loyal, playful, and always up for an adventure. However, their popularity doesn’t mean they are not found in shelters.
A sweet Labrador retriever, appropriately named Sugar, has been at The Anita’s Stevens Swan Humane Society in New York for over half her life waiting for a family. She arrived when she was a year and a half and just passed her two-year anniversary at the shelter in April.
Staff and volunteers are baffled as to why she hasn’t found a home yet. They say that she loves people and gets along with other dogs, but she is not a fan of cats. She has a lot of energy and loves to run and play.
She was abandoned by her owner due to no fault of her own but continues to smile. The shelter took to Facebook to share more about Sugar and hopefully catch the eye of an adopter. They wrote, “Two years, too long at the shelter. This smiley girl is Sugar, and she has been at the shelter for more than half her life.”
Like most shelter dogs, Sugar eagerly waits at her kennel door for her daily outdoor time. This is her favorite time of the day, and she doesn’t waste a moment. She zooms around the yard and entertains staff with her crazy antics while playing with toys.
Sugar is a bit reserved around new people and takes some time to warm up but once she does, she is a lovebug. Her caretakers have been working with her and state, “She is all about giving hugs, kisses, and just being loved on.” Sugar deserves a loving home and a family of her own. Please share her story to help her find her happy ending. She is spayed, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready to be your best friend.
