Your generous donations helped a shelter cat breathe easy for the first time.

Meet Loki.

He arrived at St. Hubert’s Animal Welfare Center in New Jersey having difficulty breathing. It was discovered during an examination by the vet that he suffers from a genetic condition called Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy causing an enlarged and abnormal shaped heart.

The shelter told us, “Loki’s heart is abnormally large with a classic ‘valentine’ shape and the muscle fibers of his heart are thickened which causes the enlarged and abnormal shape of the heart.”

The only way to provide relief was through medication, which he will need to be on for the rest of his life. The shelter received the proper medications through Greater Good Charities’ GOODS program and thanks to your continued support.

Shelters spend all of their minimal budgets on feeding the pets in their care and are unable to afford medical care or ongoing medications. The GOODS program helps by providing food so shelters can use the money saved on medical expenses. The program also delivers supplies, toys, and even some medications.

Loki is doing well and the shelter shares that the medications are helping his heart work better and slow the progression of symptoms, such as fluid build-up in the lungs. “He is a very happy, social cat, that eats well and loves to hang out with people,” added his caretakers.

The sweet boy has been adopted and was sent home with a month supply of medications. His new family reported that he is thriving in his new home and remains in good condition.
